Outboard Engine Seized (Locked Up) — What It Means
If your outboard engine is seized and won’t turn over, you’re dealing with internal damage — but that does NOT automatically mean you need a new engine.
Important: Trying to force a seized engine to turn can cause even more damage.
Common Signs of a Seized Outboard
Engine Will Not Turn
Starter engages but the engine does not rotate.
Sudden Stop While Running
Engine shuts down abruptly and will not restart.
Hard Lock or Partial Seizure
Engine may move slightly but binds or sticks.
Prior Overheating
Many seizures happen after overheating events.
What Causes an Outboard to Seize?
- Overheating
- Oil system failure
- Lean fuel condition
- Piston failure
- Bearing failure
Most seized engines are actually repairable with a proper powerhead rebuild.
What a Seized Engine Usually Means
A seized outboard typically means:
- Piston seizure in the cylinder
- Scored cylinder walls
- Bearing damage
- Loss of compression
At this point, the engine usually needs teardown and inspection.
Repair vs Replace
- Rebuild = thousands less than repower
- Keeps your existing rigging
- No compatibility issues
- Often the best option if lower unit is good
